Jowar

Jowar, also known as sorghum, is a highly nutritious and drought-resistant cereal grain belonging to the grass family Poaceae and scientifically classified as Sorghum bicolor. It is one of the oldest known grains, with origins tracing back to Africa, and has been a staple food in many parts of India, Africa, and Asia for centuries. In India, jowar holds significant importance in traditional farming and rural diets, especially in arid and semi-arid regions like Maharashtra, Karnataka, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Telangana due to its ability to grow in low rainfall and poor soil conditions without the need for chemical inputs.

Nutritionally, jowar is a gluten-free whole grain, making it an excellent alternative for people with celiac disease or gluten intolerance. It is rich in complex carbohydrates, dietary fiber, protein, iron, phosphorus, potassium, and essential antioxidants like tannins and phenolic acids. Its high fiber content aids digestion, regulates blood sugar levels, and supports heart health, while its low glycemic index makes it suitable for diabetics. Jowar also contains bioactive compounds that are linked to anti-inflammatory and cholesterol-lowering effects. In recent years, jowar has gained popularity as a superfood and is being incorporated into modern health-conscious diets in the form of rotis (flatbreads), porridges, baked goods, snacks, and health mixes.
